How to Use Apple CarPlay

To figure out if your iPhone works with Apple CarPlay and what settings you need to check, just follow this guide.

1. Check Your iPhone's Compatibility

First, you need to know if your iPhone model and its software can handle CarPlay.

  • iPhone Model: Apple CarPlay is compatible with the iPhone 5 and all newer models.

  • iOS Version: Your iPhone must be running at least iOS 7.1. It's always a good idea to update to the latest version for the best performance.

How to Check Your iOS Version: Go to Settings > General > About. You'll find your "Software Version" listed here.

2. Necessary Settings on Your iPhone

For CarPlay to work, you have to enable one crucial setting:

  • Enable Siri: Siri is essential for controlling CarPlay. Without Siri, you can't use the service.

    • Go to Settings > Siri & Search.

    • Make sure the option "Press Side Button for Siri" or "Press Home for Siri" is turned on.

3. Connecting to Your Car

Once you've confirmed your iPhone's compatibility and settings, you're ready to connect it to your car.

  • Wired Connection:

    • Make sure your car has a CarPlay-enabled USB port.

    • Connect your iPhone to the car's USB port with a USB cable.

    • The CarPlay icon should automatically appear on your car's infotainment screen. Just follow the on-screen instructions.

  • Wireless Connection (Wireless CarPlay):

    • Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your iPhone.

    • Press and hold the voice control button on your car's steering wheel.

    • Select the option for a wireless CarPlay connection on your car's screen (the exact name might vary).

    • Confirm the connection on your iPhone.

That's it! If you followed all these steps, the connection should be successful and you can start using Apple CarPlay in your car.

Compatibility with Android Auto primarily depends on your smartphone's Android version.

  • Android Version: Your smartphone must be running at least Android 8.0 (Oreo). Newer versions of the operating system are also compatible.

  • Android Auto App:

    • On smartphones with Android 10 or newer, the Android Auto app is pre-installed and can be used directly from the system.

    • On smartphones with Android 8.0 or 9.0, you must download the Android Auto app from the Google Play Store.

How to Check Your Android Version: On your smartphone, go to Settings > About phone. You will find the "Android version" line, which shows you the installed version.

    • Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your smartphone.

    • On your car's screen, select the option for the wireless Android Auto connection (the exact name may vary by manufacturer).

    • Confirm the connection on your smartphone when it detects the Bluetooth pairing.
